Matt Cardle Opens Up About Cancer Battle

X Factor
winner Matt Cardle has revealed he was diagnosed with cancer as a baby.

In October, Cardle's mother first revealed the singer's battle an aggressive Wilms' tumour when he was 2-years-old. Cardle discusses the illness in his new book My Story, which is being serialised in The Sun newspaper.

"I was a healthy baby, but when I was 18 months old my parents discovered I had a rare form of cancer called Wilms' tumour," he said. "I had a rash on my foot and my mum, being a bit neurotic at the time, took me to hospital.

"They did some tests and found I had a tumour on my kidney, which was pretty savage."

He continued: "I had to have chemotherapy and all of my hair fell out. I then got something called adhesions, which is where scar tissue kind of messes up your insides.

"That ended up being more dangerous than the actual cancer, because I got blood poisoning, and I spent a lot of time in hospital."

"I was there for about a year in all and it must have been horrendous for them," he said. "Luckily, I made a full recovery and I've been fine ever since. In fact, if you have a kidney taken out at such a young age, the other grows to compensate so you get one really powerful kidney."

Matt Cardle Demands Input In Debut Release

X Factor winner Matt Cardle has insisted that he will not be "steamrolled" into recording an album he is not happy with.

The Essex singer will start recording his first album next year.

Cardle told the Daily Star newspaper that he wants to have an input in his debut release.

"I'm absolutely not going to be steamrolled. I won't sing or record anything I don't have faith in. I'm a bit of a control freak when it comes to certain things.

"It's an awkward situation to be in really."

He continued: "I've written all my music up to this point and to suddenly have that control taken away. I have so many ideas and I'm focused on what I want a song to sound like.”

Cardle revealed that he wants to repeat the success of 2006 winner Leona Lewis and is aware of the stigma attached to winning the show.

"If every time The X Factor was on you came out with someone like Leona Lewis then people would feel differently about the show. But it ain’t going to happen every time. I want to be one of the ones who comes out and is on top of things like Leona."

"It's a team effort, everything has to work well together to move forward in the right direction," he added. "It all starts with the song. I keep saying it but you have to have a great song."

Cardle is already at the number one spot on iTunes with his single 'When We Collide'.
